- Value of artistic communication through mutual response
- Development of potential creativity
- Another me I discovered by creative inspiration
- Arts education on the basis of anthropology, archeology and naturalism
- New paradigm of culture and arts education
Why do we want to discover remains of the past and preserve them? Such remains are not simple materials but humans’ peculiar lifestyles and their products. MUMUSCHOOL gives culture and arts education to put together all cultures and classes by making use of remains which are not only evidences of human history but marks of human culture as educational tools. As all cultures and sciences are rooted in nature, culture and arts constructs the most basic and expansive realm which is not specific to one realm. Accordingly, in such sense, MUMUSCHOOL would like to pursue culture and arts education to let all people enjoy on the basis of anthropology, archeology and naturalism.
Moreover, MUMUSCHOOL would like to show a new direction for arts education, free from fragmentary ways of arts education which end in momentary experiences, and supply fields of arts to let people feel sympathy for it more easily and enjoy it.
I. Introduction of MUMUSCHOOL
- Education of culture and arts for children *Imaginary Music School*
MUMUSCHOOL is an acronym of music, museum and school. The school provides children with a field where they can understand the relationship between humanity and music and encounter various musical worlds through distinctive musical instruments of various tribes in the World. In the process, they have an opportunity to understand diversity of human culture, cultivate creativity and thus set the foundation for creation.
- Look at the world through musical instruments *Music School as a Window to the World*
The museum of MUMUSCHOOL holds the secrets of human history such as music, arts, science and history. By touching and playing different kinds of musical instruments of the world, children realize that the musical instruments are not relics in the museum, but are played now across the globe, comprising a living culture, and develop sensibility and creativity.
- Touch and feel with your own hands *Experiential Music School*
Children have time to meet sounds of various countries of the world, playing musical instruments in person and sensing the sounds. The course, which consists of conversation between children and the moderator, develops children’s creativity and gives children confidence as the subject of musical activities.

1-2. MUMU Workshop
Assembling Natural Materials into a Musical Instrument
The workshop started with introducing folk musical instruments made of the natural materials and then moved to making instruments. The Rain Stick in the Andes region, Chile, the Kalimba in Africa (thumb-piano)and other DIY kit sets will be used and they are easy to assemble. This is a chance to understand the structures including the resonating devices of the primitive musical instruments.
I. SOUND OF RAIN
Rain stick of Chile, South America
II.SOUND OF IRON
Kalimba in Africa (thumb-piano)
I. Rain Stick – "Palo de Lluvia" means a stick that can make rain falling sound.
The rain stick is believed to have been invented in Chile or Peru, and was played in the belief that it could bring about rainstorms. Rain sticks are usually made from any of several species of cactus. The cacti, which are hollow, are dried in the sun. The spines are removed, then driven into the cactus like nails. Pebbles or other small objects are placed inside the rain stick, and the ends are sealed.
Rain is very important to agricultural life and rain stick is believed to possess incantation or enchantment power. According to the South America’s old legend, playing rain stick is to wish and welcome the rain falling and, the sound can be called "Serenade".

II. Kalimba is an African musical instrument, a type of plucked idiophone common throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Each note of a Kalimba, Mbira, Kaffir Piano and so on is a separate idiophone, and in orchestral terms, the instrument as a whole belongs in the bar percussion family (specifically : lamellophones).
Kalimba traditionally consists of a wooden board to which metal tines of varying lengths are affixed. Some have mechanisms for readily tuning the tines to different scales. The longest tines are typically in the center, with shorter (and thus higher-pitched) tines arranged alternately in ascending order towards both sides of the instrument. Kalimba is most commonly held in both hands, with both thumbs being used to pluck tines either simultaneously or in turn. Kalimba is often played during religious ceremonies and social gatherings.
- Origin and Changes of Kalimba
The Kalimba appears to have been invented twice in Africa : a wood or bamboo-tined instrument appeared on the west coast of Africa about 3000 years ago, and metal-tined lamellophones appeared in the Zambezi River valley around 1,000 years ago.

2-1 ONLY ONE : My own Crafted Musical Instrument Making Project
Each participant makes one instrument of a kind in the world with one’s thoughts and purpose and presents it…
The educational objective of the program is to explore potential creativity and imagination of children and let them find out their own values. Mr. Yemin (Head of MUMUSCHOOL) who has been pursuing transformation of Korea’s music education through about 200 sessions of concerts for branch elementary schools. The cultural arts education programmes of MUMUSCHOOL (www.mumuschool.org) are being carried out successfully from 2008 - 2010, by the invitation from Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, Arts Centers, Art Center Nabi, Gyeongnam Arts & Culture Education Service."My own crafted musical Instrument making project" is not only an arts education in music, but also we may say that it is a comprehensive education including arts and music. Children acquire knowledge of arts and science and creative ability in relation to making of musical instruments. They make and present musical instruments that they imagine. This process gives children an opportunity to boost pleasure and confidence in artistic creation. Opportunities are provided to participate in various fields of arts by aiming at integrated arts education, including music, arts, literature and so on, instead of arts education specific to one field. This is high-quality arts education letting children make their works of arts with their creativity and will, instead of momentary arts experiences. In additions, certain extent of contribution is given to emotional education according to self-discovery, achievement and confidence which are gained by creative activities.
